Types Of Stuttering | Stuttering Speech Therapy

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

In this article, I write about the various types of stuttering therapies that are available. My background, I started stuttering at the age of four, it continued until I was twenty-two, basically ruining the eighteen years in between. I then fought very hard and eventually overcame the stutter.

According to latest figures, around one percent of people in the UK have a stutter. Most of these people will have seeked help at some stage of their life, and will have looked into stuttering treatments and the different forms of stuttering therapy. This is what they may have found:

Traditional speech therapy

Speech therapy is where the majority of people who stutter will start when trying to improve their speech. I myself, attended speech therapy from the age of five, I continued attending until the age of eighteen. Thirteen years and I still had the stutter, that was successful!

The advice I had been given at speech therapy was basically:

speak slowly

take a deep breath before you speak

accept your stutter

I am sorry but that advice is just not good enough.

Group stuttering speech courses

There are now a number of private speech courses that are run on a group basis. In my opinion these are of more value than traditional speech therapy as at least the aim of the course is to eradicate the stutter. Speech therapy is more of controlling and accepting the stutter.

One to one speech courses

There are also one to one speech courses available. I personally believe that this is the best form of stuttering therapy as each person will have their own individual stutter and needs.

Stuttering self help dvd and ebook

For people who would prefer a self help form of stuttering therapy, there are now stuttering dvds and ebooks available.

Cluttering | Stop Spam For Cluttering Your Iphone Email

Sunday, November 7th, 2010

Spam and email go together like peanut butter and tuna fish. I’ve got several email accounts and therefore several spam channels that I have to deal with. Fixing the problem in Outlook was relatively easy and there are several solutions. I settled on Cloudmark and I highly recommend it for those who can’t seem to wrestle their spam problem.

But I digress, this isn’t about Outlook. After this concerted effort to eliminate as much spam as possible from my inbox, I decided that it was finally time to start using a smartphone for email. My choices were Palm phones, Blackberrys, Windows based phones, Nokia and of course the iPhone. I chose the iPhone immediately. I’ve been using palm for years but not for email. Blackberry was the best alternate choice and with respect to email only, might have been a better choice.

A year ago, I had just set up a website for my client. Along with that she, of course, also established an email account. Her contact email was published on the website (against my recommendation) and within a couple of months the email bots had discovered her email and she was now a spam target. We took care of most of the issues by setting up filters in Outlook which can be a painful process. But then she got a blackberry and all that work to eliminate spam could not be duplicated on the Blackberry. Well, I did what I always do when I can’t solve a problem. I Googled it: “reduce blackberry spam”. We found a program that you can add to your blackberry that provided pretty decent spam filtering and my client is a happy camper.

Fixing this problem wasn’t as obvious with the iPhone. Frankly, I did not think to ask the store associate how iPhone handles spam. I was too impressed with “Need for Speed”. I’ve never seen a phone run a game like that. iPhone is truly a handheld video game contender but again I digress. I bought the 16 gig version (which I probably won’t ever need, but – you know). I also increased my already unlimited account by another $35 for internet access. I cancelled my gym membership to pay for the increased cost of my iPhone and justified that by saying to myself that I would get in shape the old-fashioned way. I’d run, bike and exercise my way to thin-dom – outdoors! Don’t ask how that’s going…but I LOVE my iPhone.

And then it hit me. Because I’d already resolved the spam issue in Outlook, it never occurred to me how much spam I actually get. I was literally swamped. I was getting 100 Plus emails a day and 80% of that was spam. It was so bad frankly that it rendered the email on the iPhone not usable. A quick trip to the iPhone Apps store (via the Apps icon on the iphone) reveals no software that you can put on your iPhone to solve this problem. My trusty Google search yielded the same results. Apparantly nobody but me has a spam issue on their iPhone.

Again though, Google came to the rescue. This time, in a different way. I have had a gmail account for some time. Gmail allows you to route other email through its account. I didn’t use that feature too much, but I did have one account doing this. Thinking back, spam was never an issue with that account. Gmail was filtering the spam! So, I started passing all of my POP3 email accounts through gmail. I then read my gmail account using my iphone, Voila’! no spam. The way I’ve configured this is simple. I use the IMAP settings for the iphone and POP3 settings for Outlook. When my iphone reads the emails, it leaves the emails on the servers (by default). When my outlook gets the emails from gmail, it deletes them from the server. I rarely see spam. That problem is solved.

“Any issues?”, you ask. The only annoyance I have is that now that outlook is getting my emails forwarded from gmail, if I reply, my client gets an email from my gmail account instead of my business email. It’s supposed to use a default address that I set up but it doesn’t seem to be working correctly. I had to set up my business email account back up in Outlook and default to that. I have to make sure when I reply that the email I’m sending from is not a gmail account but is my real business account email…not gmail. It seems that there is an achilles heel in all good solutions but this one I can live with.

Stuttering Children | Is Your Child Stuttering? Treat This Problem With Speech Therapy

Friday, November 5th, 2010

Children are some of life’s best surprises. For many, they are the blessings that complete one’s very existence in this world. That is why parents are naturally anxious about their children’s health and wellness. They want to make sure that their children are equipped to deal with different situations and emerge successful in life. If you’re a parent, then you know how important it is to nurture your child’s development as early as possible. For one thing, speech therapy materials can greatly help parents with stuterring children.

One of the challenges that parents meet upon raising their bundles of joy is stuttering, a common disorder among children. Stuttering is not as simple as what television and film portray. In fact, it is one of the most complex disorders around. It takes into account a variety of factors, such as the child’s behavior, feelings, and attitude towards the way he talks. It is not just something you can have diagnosed and the doctor will give you a prescription for medication. It takes a while to achieve lasting results.

The primary symptom of stuttering children is the break in speech. Their speech is characterized by breaks, not necessarily intentional pauses, but rather a kind of interruption that springs from a difficulty in pronouncing, enunciating and simply saying words as they are. Normally, this break comes in the form of syllable repetition. Stuttering children can be heard repeating the very first syllable or sound of a word. They tend to prolong the words, spending too much time trying to get it out of their tongue and into the air. Sometimes, stuttering children skip the words they have difficulty saying, resulting in non-intelligible sentences.

Needless to say, if you’re child is suffering from a stuttering issue, it is best to employ patience and understanding. This is something you’re going to have to tackle step by step. There is no magic pill that can help your child get over his stuttering problem overnight. The good news, there is one thing that has been tried and tested by child development experts to really work: the use of speech therapy materials.

Thanks to the pioneering efforts of child psychiatrists, speech therapy was received and later developed into a reliable treatment for speech defects, one of which is stuttering in children. Of course, the best way to make any kind of therapy work is by introducing materials that are specifically designed to meet the needs of the patients. For stuttering children, materials for speech therapy are created to attract and hold their attention are most effective.

And what items are most attractive and attention-grabbing as far as children are concerned? Why, toys, what else? Child development experts have turned on the favorite activity of their young subjects – playing – to help solve stuttering. The only difference is, the toys used in playtime are intended to treat stutter issues. So, what exactly are these toys? Speech therapy materials include jigsaw puzzles, building blocks, art stuff particularly crayons and coloring books, and board games. Materials used in stuttering-focused speech therapy are not just for display. During playtime, a child manifests his natural self, thereby allowing speech therapists to evaluate the situation better. Playtime also encourages a child to communicate effortlessly, pushing him to reach his potential in the area of speech.

Cure Stuttering | Tips To Cure Stuttering

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

Stuttering is a speech disorder in which the normal flow of speech is disrupted by frequent repetitions or prolongations of speech sounds, syllables or words or by an individual’s inability to start a word. The speech disruptions may be accompanied by rapid eye blinks, tremors of the lips and/or jaw or other struggle behaviors of the face or upper body that a person who stutters may use in an attempt to speak.

Various people tried to make me believe that there was not a cure for stuttering. I did listen to their thoughts but would never accept what they were telling me. There view point was very defeatist and negative. That may well be their character but certainly is not mine. I had to believe that one day I would be able to speak fluently without the fear of stuttering, without this dream life would not be worth living.

As a child who stutters grows older, he becomes aware of how his way of speaking differs from others and starts to experience more of the emotional ramifications of the disorder. He may see that others don’t have a hard time speaking. Other children most certainly point out the differences, either politely, “Why do you repeat your words like that?” or in a teasing manner. Feeling different from peers influences the child’s self-concept and it is crucial that he not suffer from feeling like there is something wrong with him.

If you have a stutter and are wondering whether there is a cure, ask yourself a few questions. Do you stutter when you are singing? Do you stutter when you are shouting? Do you stutter when you are talking to yourself? For the majority of people who have a stutter or stammer, the answer to these questions will have been no. They were for me and this at least gave me hope.

When therapy is required—since there really is no cure for stuttering, keeping a journal and trying to eliminate triggers as much as possible will be the first step. Once this is done and your child requires speech therapy, it will be focused on helping the child learn an easier way to talk. The earlier the speech therapy begins the better chance a child has of overcoming or greatly lessening the stuttering.
